Out of all of the Thai islands, Koh Samui is known best for its numerous resorts and hotels. Naturally I set out to find the best property based not on name (every luxury hotel chain has an outpost here) but on the overall experience.
I was lucky enough to stay at the InterContinental Samui, and as you pull up and get out of the car, you can feel that you’re in for a something special. From the moment you walk into the lobby, the light floods the open pavilion and you have an unobstructed view of Taling Ngam Bay. All of the weariness from travel melts away. The checkin process is done on a couch and away from a stuffy desk, and it was one of the most seamless checkin’s that I have experienced during my travels in Southeast Asia. Every FYI and comment followed the next perfectly, and nothing was out of place, which is something you would expect from the InterContinental. But based on my travels thus far, even five star hotels in Southeast Asia haven’t gotten the full five star experience perfectly right yet. And it all comes down to the smallest of details, things you don’t realize until they go wrong. Checkin and welcome drink, tour of the resort, usher to my room, all A+.
The InterCon was one of the first resorts to set up shop in Samui and I could tell by the level of service and operations that it is a very well oiled machine, everything running as smoothly as possible so that nothing takes away from your getaway. From a phenomenal breakfast (you have to have multiple pain et chocolat and banana bread! And fresh fruit!) to a refreshing morning swim (in one of their seven pools, many of them infinity) to a lunch break and drinks by the beachside pool, an afternoon lounge on the private beach, and the most amazing sunset on the private pier, all effortless. With that said, I did find a few things in my room that needed fixing, i.e. lights, terrace door lock and leaky showerhead. I told the staff and they addressed them right away. And they are one step ahead of it all, as I did notice some facelifts happening while I was there. Nothing that takes away from your visit, just things that will make your next one all the better.
I unfortunately got sick during my stay, and the staff made sure I didn’t need a doctor, and called to check in to see if I was ok the next day. Falling ill is never fun, let alone in another country and on an island, and the genuine care the manager expressed made it all the more bearable.
If you are looking for a quiet getaway in Samui, InterContinental is your answer. Even though guests are mostly families and couples on vacation, my friend and I had a enjoyable, low-key weekend hanging out with each other. I hope you enjoy your visit to InterContinental Samui as much as I did. The part I loved the most was getting to choose my very own pillows from options I didn’t know existed.👍
Thank you InterContinental Samui for partnering on this post, and congratulations for winning World’s Leading Wedding Resort, Asia’s Leading Beach Resort, Asia’s Most Romantic Resort, Thailand’s Leading Beach Resort and Thailand’s Leading Resort, all in 2016.
